Albany, NY, October 17, 2016– Waterworks Pub on Central Avenue in Albany is set to host the 2ND Annual “The L-Word” event to benefit the Susan G. Komen Northeastern New York Foundation on October 22ND, 2016 from 7pm-11pm. The benefit, which was held at Rocks on Central Ave last year, is sponsored by Tipsy Social, and will feature Fly 92.3 DJ Shawn Gillie, local comedians Jim Felter, Sharon Dyer, Ryan Shanahan, and Dre, and other area performers all in an effort to help support breast cancer research right here in the Capital Region.
“We don’t think about these things. We have so many other things going on in our lives, that getting a mammogram can be very scary, and we put it off. We need more awareness in our community about the risk of breast cancer among Lesbian women. This is our way of doing that.” –Ann Frye, The L-Word Organizer
Breast cancer in Lesbian and Bisexual Women is increased due to social determinants, such as, lack of health insurance, fear of discrimination, negative experiences with providers, and never having children1. The L-Word looks to promote breast cancer awareness among Lesbian and Bisexual women, as well as, the Transgender community. There is a $5 suggested donation at the door, and all proceeds from the event will be donated to Susan G. Komen of Northeastern New York to help women in the capital region.
“There are a ton of people getting involved. Whether they’re a part of the LGBTQ community or not, so many people and businesses in Albany have come together to make this event a success. We’re really excited to have the sponsorship from Tipsy Social this year. Last year’s event went really well, raising over $1000, and we’re hoping that this partnership will get the message out there to people who have never attended the event.” –Ann Frye
