Should my business be on TikTok? The short answer… no, not just yet.

You may have heard how the social media platform, TikTok, is all the rage right now; how every business is eager to hop on and get started making TikToks for their business in hopes of reaching as many people as possible. It’s a seemingly good idea, right? I mean, if TikTok is getting so much attention, my business should be using it.. right? Well, here’s the quick answer, no, your business should not be on TikTok, – not yet, at least.

TikTok blew up as an app quickly and all at once. A majority of users on TikTok are part of Generation Z; a younger population between the ages of 5-24. This is probably the first reason why TikTok isn’t the right social media platform for your business. If you’re still thinking, “my business loves people between the ages of 5 and 24,” here’s a list of other reasons why you shouldn’t.

    1. The uncertainty of the app. There’s a lot of news going around about TikTok being banned from users in the United States. Putting your time and effort into trying to make TikTok right for your business without knowing what is coming next for the app could end up being a serious waste of time and money. But hey, you’re a gambler, right? Keep reading…
    2. The content of the app. Content is king, and TikTok’s content is all for those Gen Z’ers. If the names James Charles, JoJo Siwa, and the Dobre Twins have you scratching your head, chances are your content is going to flop with a majority of TikTok users. But hey, you’re hip, right? Keep reading…
    3. Branded content. TikTok is full of user videos that all lack any sort of branding. Content created by businesses is aimed at staying relevant and building brand awareness without sticking to a strict brand guideline. Take Nike for example. Nike’s account is chaulked full of athletes dancing and having a great time. If your business isn’t flexible with its branded content, TikTok is definitely not the platform for you. But hey, your branded content is über cool, right? Keep reading…
    4. The Vibe! TikTok is all about being creative (in an uncreative kind of way) with a lot of videos consisting of people dancing or lip-syncing to hit songs. Users aren’t looking to be hit with a proposal on why your business is right for them! If you’re looking to create content all about your business, just no! But hey, you know every word to Single Ladies by Beyonce, right? Keep reading…

Still reading? Well, you’ve reached the end. If you’re someone who just has to finish what they started, thanks! If you’re still trying to find a reason why TikTok is right for your business – you’re a lost cause. Get out of here and Tap Tap Tap In over there. In all seriousness, TikTok is a great place for having fun and forgetting about your woes, but, I highly recommend that you DO NOT hop on the TikTok bandwagon for your business. It could be a possibility down the road, but for now, let’s just get you focused on keeping up with the social media your business is already on.
